The Offinso Divisional Police Command has arrested seven young men suspected to engage in the sale and smoking of marijuana popularly, known as ‘wee’.

The exercise, according to the Division, was organised to rid off the town of criminals.

Chief Superintendent Ben Yenkyi who led the exercise bemoaned the rise in criminal activities, the abuse and peddling of illicit drugs in the area.

He said these activities are tarnishing the image of the community and the most disturbing aspect is that young persons below the ages of 18 years were involved.

He advised parents to caution their wards because there would be dealt with ruthlessly.

The exercise he added would not be a nine-day wonder, and suspects arrested would be arraigned before the court.

The use and abuse of drugs he noted have led to heinous crimes including, murder and other violent crimes, and the Police have a duty to protect lives and property.

He said: ”the use of wee by young persons in the division has led to serious challenges. Several young persons are now dropouts, others who are in school are not performing well. It has led to heinous crimes including, murder where some are cutting off the head of people. Such crimes are committed by people who abuse hard drugs. We have a duty to maintain law and order, and that is what we will do.”
