The police are investigating an individual who vandalized the Big Six monument at the Airport Roundabout in Accra.

The suspect, identified as Newwel Gavu, not only damaged the statue but also destroyed several signposts in the area.
The incident occurred around 3:00 am on Saturday, August 31. Witnesses reported the destruction to the police promptly.
TV3’s visit to the scene revealed that the monument was severely damaged, with no statues remaining intact. Broken pieces and scattered blocks with exposed iron rods were observed.

The motive behind the act remains unclear. The suspect, Newwel Gavu, is currently in police custody and will undergo legal proceedings.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed the arrest and stated that Gavu will be processed through the legal system.
During the visit, a pair of sandals believed to belong to the suspect was found at the scene.
The destruction of the monument is expected to require significant resources to repair or replace. This incident has raised security concerns, with many viewing it as a troubling sign.
“We would like to commend members of the public and the Airport security for their vigilance which led to the arrest of the suspect,” the police acknowledged.
