A former Atlanta police officer, Garrett Rolfe, was charged on Wednesday with felony murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, among other criminal charges, in the fatal shooting of Rayshard Brooks outside of a fast-food restaurant last week.
Another officer involved in the confrontation, Devin Brosnan, was charged with aggravated assault and two counts of violating his oath as an officer.

The shooting took place on Friday night after the police were called to a Wendy’s restaurant where Mr. Brooks, 27, had fallen asleep in his car in the drive-through line, the authorities said.
Within 24 hours of the shooting, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said that she did not believe it was justified, leading to the firing of Mr. Rolfe and the resignation of the city’s police chief, Erika Shields.
