Political analyst Yaw Asani Tano has challenged President Akufo-Addo’s statement that he cannot hand over power to someone he has defeated twice in elections.

Tano questioned the authority behind the President’s claim, emphasizing that the power lies with the masses who voted him into office.

He also highlighted the lack of a tangible legacy left behind by Akufo-Addo during his time in office.

Tano made these remarks on a panel discussion on Peace FM on May 11, 2024, in response to the President’s recent call for first-time voters to register and vote massively against the opposition leader, John Mahama. Akufo-Addo had urged voters to elect Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his successor to cement the gains made by his government.

Tano argued that the President’s statement raises questions about his willingness to hand over power peacefully. “Who is he to say he won’t hand over? The power lies with the people, and we voted for him to become President. If he has created a bad legacy to gain what he wants, he should not annoy us by saying he won’t hand over to someone he has defeated twice,” Tano said.

The President’s statement has sparked controversy, with some interpreting it as a refusal to accept the outcome of future elections.

Tano’s response highlights the importance of peaceful transfer of power and the need for leaders to prioritize the interests of the people over personal ambitions.
