Energy expert, Fritz Moses has revealed that power theft in the country could consequently surge if electricity tariff is increased.
He made this claim because the ECG suggested raising electricity tariff, which suggests that Ghanaians may have to pay about 60% of what they paid in the past.
The supposed tariff increase by Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is said to be a move for the agency to generate more funds, in other to ensure effective operation.
The proposal is currently awaiting approval from the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) before it can be implemented.
Speaking on at a media outlet, Mr Fritz Moses said although the tariff will be beneficial to the ECG in its quest to improve services, consumers will be disadvantaged.
“Even if there will be an increment, it should be gradual but if you make it huge at once, it does not help the consumers,” he said.
He added that, ”If the tariffs are increased hugely, you may see an increase in power theft, because many Ghanaians will not want to be on national grid and pay for electricity when they can dodge payment.”
