Donald Trump is on a late-night Twitter storm, retweeting claims of voter fraud as polls closed in two critical races that will determine control of the US Senate.

The two Senate runoff elections are leftovers from the November general election, when neither of the candidates hit the 50 per cent threshold. Democrats need to win both races to seize the Senate majority – and have already gained victory in one, with Raphael Warnock defeating Kelly Loeffler.

“Looks like they are setting up a big ‘voter dump’ against the Republican candidates. Waiting to see how many votes they need?” Trump tweeted on Tuesday night, a claim for which he provided no evidence.

Earlier, Mr Trump tightened his grip on the loyalty of Mike Pence as he continued to push the vice president to challenge the rectification of the certification of the Electoral College results.

Mr Trump denied reports that Mr Pence had told him it was not within his constitutional power to block the process of electing Joe Biden to the presidency, insisting it actually was.
