A Basic 5 pupil of Falahiyat E/A Primary School Block “A” is currently receiving treatment at Damongo St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital in the Savannah Region, after allegedly being severely flogged by his class teacher, Mr. Fatawu.
According to the child’s father, Abdul Wahidu Mahama, the incident occurred on Tuesday, January 20.
The teacher reportedly assigned homework, and when the student scored 2 out of 8, he, along with a few classmates, was asked to lie on dual desk tables in the classroom. The teacher then allegedly used a wire cane to flog the students on their backs and other parts of their bodies.
“My son tried to block the cane with his hand, but the teacher flogged him heavily and verbally insulted the children for their low performance,” Mr. Mahama said.
On Wednesday, January 21, Abdul Wahidu complained of severe pain in his hand. After unsuccessful attempts to treat him at home, the family took him to Damongo St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital. Doctors admitted the child and prescribed medication, followed by surgery, which was carried out on Tuesday, January 27, around 10 a.m.
Mr. Mahama added that the teacher has not visited the child in the hospital since the incident.
According to the father, the last time he visited the family at home was Sunday, January 25, in the evening when the child’s mother called him.
However, the headmistress and another school staff member visited the hospital to check on the student’s condition.
The father is appealing to the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant stakeholders for justice.
“This is about protecting our innocent future assets,” he said.
