Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed concerns over the lack of consultation in the construction of astroTurfs across Ghana.
Speaking at a gender empowerment series held at Labadi Beach Hotel on Monday, November 18, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stressed the importance of inclusive decision-making in public infrastructure projects. She argued that such projects should cater to the diverse needs of all citizens, particularly women and girls.

During her address titled “Advancing Gender Equality: A National Dialogue on Current Policies and Innovative Measures for Local and National Impact,” she highlighted how the design and implementation of sports facilities often exclude women. “The absence of women and girls in the planning stages of these projects reflects systemic inequalities,” she stated.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang questioned whether the schedules, interests, and unique requirements of women were considered when planning these facilities, emphasizing that neglecting these factors undermines efforts to promote gender equity.
She concluded by advocating for inclusive infrastructure development that benefits all segments of society and prioritizes equality. “Public projects must serve everyone, ensuring that women and girls have equal access to opportunities and facilities.”
“I see beautiful AstroTurfs dotted all over our country, and I don’t have issues against that, but I ask myself, is gender sensitivity a consideration? I have not seen a single girl on any of those AstroTurfs and I ask why that is the case.
“So even in sports, we are pushing down gender inequality. Were women part of the discussion before they [the AstroTurfs] were built to know what games women would want to play and what time women had for play? As we look into the future, I urge all of us to reflect on the spaces that we create to foster equal opportunities for both genders.”
