The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has taken action against the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for its failure to submit all bank and investment accounts to the Commission, imposing a fine of GH¢36,000 on it, a report by myjoyonline.com has said.

This penalty is a result of ECG’s inability to comply with multiple requests made by the PURC, with deadlines of March 25, March 27, and April 2, 2024.

The report further stated that, in light of the possible negative effects on service standards and customers, the PURC has transferred the obligation to settle this penalty to the individuals on the board who were in office between January 1 and March 18, 2024.

These members of the board have been directed to remit the fine into a specified fuel account managed jointly by the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Finance before May 30, 2024.

As a result of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) failure to adhere to the 3-day statutory notice requirement for planned power outages, it has been fined a substantial amount of GH¢5,868,000.00.

The report mentioned that despite several requests made to ECG by the deadlines of March 25, March 27, and April 2, 2024, the information submitted was considered incomplete, leading to the imposition of a penalty.

The report stated that ECG must settle its unpaid debts under the Cash Waterfall Mechanism, totaling GH¢446,283,706.29, to Category B recipients by April 30, 2024.

Failure to pay will result in repercussions for both the board members and management.
