Former Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31.
The decision follows a knee injury he sustained during his debut for Italian side Como last month. Varane, who joined Como on a free transfer in July 2024, revealed that he will remain with the club in a non-playing capacity.

In an emotional message on Instagram, he stated, “I hold myself to the highest standard. I want to go out strong, not just holding on to the game. It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instinct.”
The ex-Real Madrid and France international began his illustrious career at French club Lens before moving to Real Madrid in 2011.
During his decade in Spain, he won 18 trophies, including four Champions League titles and three La Liga championships.
In 2021, Varane transferred to Manchester United for an initial £34 million, making 95 appearances and winning the Carabao Cup in 2022. His final match was United’s FA Cup victory over Manchester City in May 2024.
Tributes have poured in from the football community. FIFA president Gianni Infantino praised Varane as “a legend of the beautiful game and a crucial voice in FIFA’s global stand against racism.”
Former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo also paid tribute, writing, “A great career and a football legend! Congratulations for everything, brother. Hope to see you soon.”
On the international stage, Varane earned 93 caps for France, winning the 2018 World Cup and the 2021 Nations League.
Reflecting on his retirement, he expressed gratitude, saying, “I have no regrets. I have won more than I could have dreamed of, but beyond the accolades, I am proud that I stuck to my principles. I hope I have made you all proud.”
Looking ahead, Varane will remain with Como in a new role, stating, “A new life begins off the pitch… just without using my boots and shin pads.”
