Former France defender Raphael Varane has completed a transfer to newly-promoted Serie A side Como, where he will join former Premier League star Cesc Fabregas, now the club’s manager.

The 31-year-old Varane, who was a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Manchester United this summer, has signed a two-year deal with Como. This move marks his entry into Italy’s top flight.
Varane previously left Real Madrid, where he won three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies, to join Manchester United in 2021.
Varane, who retired from international football last year after earning 93 caps for France, is enthusiastic about starting this new chapter under Cesc Fabregas, the former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder who was recently appointed as Como’s head coach.

“I will meet Cesc again, but this time not as an opponent,” Varane said. “I am very happy, I really like his playing philosophy and his passion for football.”
Como, back in Serie A after 21 years, will rely on Varane’s experience to stay in the top league. Despite struggling with injuries during his time at Manchester United, Varane is hopeful for a successful comeback with Como.
The club’s Serie A season starts with a tough match against Juventus on August 19, which will mark Varane’s debut in Italy’s top division.
