The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a seven-month deadline for all commercial road transport operators and other regulated entities to register with the authority, warning of severe sanctions for non-compliance.

This directive extends to owners of floating vehicles, who must join a transport union or establish a company and register to operate legally by March 31, 2025.

David Osafo Adonteng, NRSA Director-General, explained that the registration is crucial for collecting data on operators, their safety measures, and their operational practices.

The NRSA aims to address concerns regarding floating drivers—those not affiliated with unions, companies, or terminals—who are challenging to monitor and regulate.

Under the National Road Safety Regulations, 2022 (LI 2468), the NRSA is mandated to maintain a register of all entities involved in road transport to ensure legal operation.

The law covers commercial transport operators, ride-hailing companies, transport units within ministries and private companies, institutional bus services, and tyre service centres.

Regulation 92 of L.I 2468 requires entities that provided road transport services before the regulation’s enactment to comply within two years.

The registration process allows the NRSA to issue licenses and ensure compliance.

Adonteng emphasized the importance of using the seven-month grace period to register, as the NRSA will intensify enforcement after the deadline.

The authority has also automated its systems to enhance monitoring and will implement stringent pre-departure checks and driver training programs.

Monitoring devices will be installed in vehicles to track and ensure compliance with road safety standards.
