Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, has voiced strong accusations against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the 2024 general elections approach.

In an interview on Channel One TV’s Face to Face, Spio-Garbrah claimed that the NPP intends to “milk the country dry” for personal benefit rather than prioritizing the welfare of Ghanaians.

He urged citizens to carefully assess their choices, comparing the leadership styles of NPP’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s John Dramani Mahama.

Spio-Garbrah expressed firm support for Mahama, emphasizing that allegations raised by the NPP against him remain unproven. He also criticized Dr. Bawumia, attributing part of Ghana’s economic challenges to his leadership.

Highlighting Mahama’s achievements during his previous administration, Spio-Garbrah encouraged Ghanaians to support Mahama in the upcoming election.

“The choice for Ghanaians in the 2024 elections should be a very clear one, and I’m saying it’s not only about the persons mentioned [Bawumia and Mahama]. But the traditions they belong to…The NPP in general have not come to favour the people’s needs and requirements, they have come to look for their own personal goals, ambitions, satisfactions, wealth, and greed, there are a lot of that amongst them.

“This is one of the areas of demarcation Ghanaians must take into account. Even though President Mahama was President and NPP called him all sorts of names, he has taken this, he has stolen this, Dubai, so so and so, he asked for proof and up till now, nothing has come against him to say that he was a criminal or evil person, or was a thief in any shape or form? That’s one aspect of the behaviour of leaders. You look at leaders and see what they are made of.

“Mahama’s infrastructural achievements, Bawumia would say he was a mate and not the driver, so you can’t blame him for the accidents, the car his boss has been hitting so many times. It’s his boss who is responsible. But his boss chose him and manoeuvred him into office against the tradition of their own party. You know Alan was the heir apparent.”
