John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examination Council (WAEC), has stated that the release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results may experience delays due to the government’s unpaid debt to the council.
Kapi explained that WAEC initially aimed to release the results between December 9 and 15, but the current funding shortfall could affect this timeline, particularly during the marking and processing phases.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Kapi clarified that although the government had provided initial funding for the exams, it has not provided the necessary additional funds for the post-examination activities.
Despite multiple meetings and reassurances, WAEC has yet to receive the promised support, placing the council in a difficult position as it prepares for the marking of the exams.
“Before the exam began, we were informed that the government had allocated funds for the exams. We were assured that additional funds would be released after the exams to facilitate the post-examination processes.
However, despite several meetings, no additional funds have been received yet, which raises concerns about the marking exercise,” Kapi said.
He further revealed that the total amount required for the 2024 WASSCE for school candidates was GH¢186,437,617.50 (approximately GH¢186 million).
While WAEC initially received GH¢60.9 million to begin the exams, the council was relying on further funding to ensure that the results would be ready for release between December 9 and 15.
However, the lack of funds could delay this process, pushing the release date further back.
