The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take immediate and decisive action to restore discipline in senior high schools across the country.

He expressed deep concern over what he described as a disturbing decline in discipline within the nation’s educational institutions.

Addressing school heads at a meeting in Sunyani in the Bono Region, the Minister cited a recent shooting incident at SDA Senior High School in Kumasi as a stark example of the rising indiscipline among students.

Describing the incident as one that “leaves much to be desired,” Mr. Iddrisu emphasized the urgent need for reforms to address the growing misconduct in schools.

He further assured that the GES Director-General, Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, has the full support of the government to implement necessary measures aimed at curbing violence and reinforcing discipline in educational institutions.

“He has our full policy support to enforce those directives. So, the ‘unGhanaian’ development of shooting in Kumasi, the Director General of the GES has the full support of the government for you to strengthen your inspection in order that guns, knives, and other violent tools are not found in our schools,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the family of 16-year-old Suzi Adwoa Penamang—the SDA student who was shot by her colleague—is urgently appealing for financial assistance to prevent her from going blind as a result of her injuries.
