The Ministry of Roads and Highways has assured the public that the ongoing strike by Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) workers will not interfere with any current road projects across the country.

Ahmed Nasir Yartey, the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, made this statement during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show with Bernard Avle on Tuesday, November 12.

Yartey acknowledged the concerns surrounding the strike but emphasized that measures have been implemented to ensure that road projects proceed without disruption.

He explained that most government-funded road projects are managed by independent contractors who work under legally binding contracts and are supervised by external consultants.

This arrangement, Yartey noted, provides a safeguard against any potential disruptions caused by GHA staff strikes, as the contractors carry out the daily project activities.

Yartey reassured the public that the Ministry remains committed to meeting project deadlines and continuing infrastructure development as planned.

“I want to assure you that all ongoing road projects will go on uninterrupted,” he said, emphasizing that most of these projects are managed by contractors and supervised by consultants, which ensures that there will be no halting of projects.

While expressing understanding of the GHA workers’ grievances, Yartey called for peaceful dialogue to resolve the matter.

He emphasized the importance of constructive engagement between the Ministry and the workers, in line with the Labour Commission’s recommendations, to address the concerns without affecting the Ministry’s broader infrastructure goals.

The strike by GHA workers is in response to the government’s refusal to suspend the controversial National Roads Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1118).

Key demands from the workers include the removal of two high-ranking officials: Ing. I.K. Mensah, Chairman of the GHA Board, and Ing. Collins B. Donkor, Chief Executive Officer of the National Roads Authority.
