The Ministry of Roads and Highways has launched an investigation into the fatal rock blast accident that occurred at Buduburam.

This incident, part of a construction project on the Budumburam stretch of the Accra-Winneba highway, has resulted in the deaths of four individuals, with several others sustaining critical injuries.

In a statement, the Ministry confirmed that it is collaborating with the Ghana Police Service and the National Disaster and Management Organisation (NADMO) to assess the number of casualties and provide necessary care for those affected.

Witnesses reported that the rock blast, which lasted a few minutes, was conducted after vehicles were stopped in the area. Local residents indicated that this was not the first occurrence of rock blasting on this section of the highway, noting that it often causes damage to nearby properties.

The injured individuals have been transported to St. Gregory Hospital in Budumburam for treatment.

The Ministry extended its condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.

The Ministry also stated that the contractor had successfully executed 21 controlled blasting exercises at the site without incident, in coordination with NADMO and the Ghana Police Service.

A commitment was made to thoroughly investigate this incident and share the findings with the public.
