Senior Russian General Igor Kirillov, head of the country’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defence Forces, has been killed in a bomb attack in Moscow.

Kirillov and his assistant were killed when a bomb, concealed inside a scooter, detonated as they exited an apartment building early on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.

The explosion occurred in south-east Moscow, roughly 6.5km (four miles) from the Kremlin.

Russian media reports suggest the device was remotely triggered and contained the equivalent of 300 grams of TNT.

Images from the scene show severe damage to the building’s entrance, with scorch marks, shattered windows, and debris strewn across the area.

Kirillov’s death comes just a day after Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) sentenced him in absentia, accusing him of using banned chemical weapons in Ukraine.

Western nations had previously sanctioned Kirillov for his involvement in the Ukraine war, with the UK accusing him of “helping deploy… barbaric weapons.”
