Mohamed Salah has surged ahead of Erling Haaland in the race for this season’s Premier League Golden Boot after a sensational performance in Liverpool’s thrilling 5-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Salah scored his 14th and 15th goals of the season, putting him two clear of Haaland, who has netted only three times in his last 12 matches. In contrast, Salah has been in prolific form, scoring 12 goals in his last 12 appearances.

Should Salah secure the Golden Boot this season, he will equal Thierry Henry’s record of four awards. Along with Henry, only Harry Kane and Alan Shearer have won three Golden Boots, placing Salah among the Premier League’s elite.

In addition to his Golden Boot charge, Salah has moved up to fourth place in Liverpool’s all-time goalscorers list with a total of 229 goals. This milestone sees him surpass the legendary Billy Liddell, who scored 228 goals in 534 appearances for the club in the mid-1900s.

Salah now sets his sights on Gordon Hodgson, who netted 241 goals for Liverpool between 1925 and 1936.

However, Salah still has a long way to go to challenge Ian Rush, the club’s all-time leading scorer, a feat that seems unlikely given Salah’s age (32) and his contract expiring next summer.

Having also assisted goals for Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz on Sunday, Salah moved onto 11 assists for the season, one above Bukayo Saka, who suffered a hamstring injury for Arsenal on Saturday.

It means Salah is in pole position to win the Golden Boot AND Playmaker awards, a feat he achieved in 2021/22.

Salah is the first player in Premier League history to reach double figures for goals AND assists before Christmas, while he is also the first player since the competition began in 1992 to produce 10+ goals AND 10+ assists in four consecutive seasons.
