FC Samartex left-back Isaac Afful has been called up to join the Black Stars for their upcoming doubleheader against Sudan in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

At 25 years old, he is one of just two locally-based players included in the 25-man squad, alongside Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Frederick Asare.

Afful’s consistent performances have caught the attention of head coach Otto Addo. Given Ghana’s ongoing challenges in the left-back position due to injuries and inconsistent displays, Afful is viewed as a valuable backup for returning left-back Gideon Mensah.

The defender played a crucial role in Samartex’s success during the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League, making 25 appearances for the Timber Giants. His strong form also secured him a place in Samartex’s CAF Champions League campaign this season.

Ghana will host Sudan at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday before traveling to Libya for the return match, as they aim to secure a spot in the 2025 AFCON.
