Senior Education Advisor at Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch), Dr. Peter Attafuah, has attributed the growing wave of indiscipline among Senior High School (SHS) students to the conduct of some parents.

According to him, students often reflect behaviours they observe at home, making parental influence a critical factor in shaping attitudes.

“Parents in their homes must speak to their wards and demonstrate discipline themselves. They must refrain from insulting others in front of their children. That act is horrible. Most children learn their attitudes from home,” he said.

He warned that when parents engage in verbal abuse or exhibit disrespectful behaviour in front of their children, it sets a negative example that students are likely to replicate in school and social settings.

Dr. Attafuah emphasised the foundational role of the home in a child’s development.

“We are urging parents to conduct themselves properly in the presence of their children,” he stressed.

The Eduwatch advisor called for a collective effort from parents, teachers, and school administrators to address the discipline gap, noting that instilling strong values at home remains the first step toward behavioural change in schools.
