The National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association has pledged to complement the efforts of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in tackling illegal mining activities on major water bodies, particularly in communities across the Ashanti Region.

The Association announced that its task force has made notable progress in curbing illegal mining along the Offin Upper Stream, a hotspot for unauthorised mining activities. For the past several weeks, the task force has been visiting communities along the Offin River, where illegal miners have taken over and destroyed the water source.

President of the National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association, Michael Kwadwo Peprah, speaking to the media on Thursday, December 11, said the initiatives are aimed at reinforcing the government’s fight against illegal mining.

He commended the government for the budgetary allocation to NAIMOS but emphasised the need for increased community sensitisation to ensure broader support for anti-galamsey operations.

“NAIMOS alone cannot fight galamsey. What is needed is more sensitisation. This will help safeguard various water bodies, lands, and water reserves from destruction,” he said.
