In a televised address, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced the declaration of emergency martial law, citing escalating threats from North Korea and domestic pro-communist factions.

The unexpected move comes amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

President Yoon emphasized that the decision was essential to “protect the liberal constitutional order” and eliminate “pro-North Korea forces” that he claims are destabilizing the nation.

While he underscored the seriousness of the situation, he did not provide details on the specific measures to be implemented under martial law.

In response, Lee Jae-myung, leader of the opposition Democratic Party, argued that the martial law declaration is unconstitutional.

Additionally, Han Dong-hoon, head of the ruling People Power Party, expressed strong opposition, calling the declaration “wrong” and vowing to block it.
