The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has led a high-level parliamentary delegation to the United Kingdom as part of efforts to deepen Ghana–UK relations through sports and democratic engagement.

The visit, which took place on March 14, 2026, saw the delegation—comprising officials from Primeval Media Limited, organisers of the Democracy Cup—hold discussions with Sunderland A.F.C..

Talks centred on forging a partnership between the Parliament of Ghana and the English club to promote Ghana’s democratic credentials while showcasing the country’s investment, tourism, and cultural opportunities through football diplomacy.

As part of the engagement, Sunderland A.F.C. expressed its readiness to host the winner of Ghana’s 2026 Parliamentary Democracy Cup later this year, while also indicating interest in collaborating on tourism promotion initiatives with Ghana.

The delegation, which also included officials from the Ghana High Commission in the United Kingdom, toured the club’s iconic Stadium of Light and observed a top-flight match between Sunderland A.F.C. and Brighton & Hove Albion F.C..

The engagement highlights the increasing role of sports diplomacy in advancing Ghana’s democratic narrative and strengthening international partnerships, particularly with key allies such as the United Kingdom.
