The Ministry of Youth and Sports has directed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to request that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) inspect the University of Ghana Stadium and the Accra Sports Stadium as potential venues for the Black Stars’ upcoming match.

This directive follows CAF’s decision to ban the Baba Yara Stadium, Ghana’s only CAF-approved venue for international games, due to the poor condition of the pitch. The ban was imposed after Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to Angola on an inadequate surface.

Following this match, CAF instructed the GFA to find an alternative venue abroad for the Black Stars’ next game. The decision has faced significant criticism of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority, which oversees Ghana’s sports facilities. In response, the Sports Ministry has urged the GFA to advocate for CAF to inspect other potential venues in Ghana.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has highlighted the Accra Sports Stadium and the University of Ghana Stadium as potential venues for the Black Stars’ upcoming match.

They noted that concerns raised by CAF during the last use of the Accra Sports Stadium have been addressed and emphasized the University of Ghana Stadium’s successful hosting of the African Games and the U-17 WAFU B Championship earlier this year.

The Ministry is optimistic that either stadium will receive CAF approval ahead of Ghana’s crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan.

The GFA is expected to communicate the Ministry’s message to CAF, with a decision anticipated soon on whether the match will be held in Ghana or abroad.
