The appraisal drilling of Springfield Exploration and Production Ltd.’s Afina well in the West Cape Three Points Block 2 offshore Ghana is nearing completion, marking a significant milestone for the company and Ghana’s energy sector.

The $60 million appraisal, conducted with the Deepsea Bollsta Rig, aims to confirm the well’s production capacity and commercial potential after international arbitration ordered the unitization of Springfield’s Afina discovery and ENI’s Sankofa field.

Discovered in 2019, the Afina well shows potential for producing over 600 million barrels of oil per day. The project is seen as a major opportunity for Ghana’s oil production, with Springfield positioning itself as the first Ghanaian-owned company to explore deep-water reserves.

Well Test Officer Willem Drogt expressed confidence that the appraisal would meet its deadlines, despite some minor delays caused by equipment failures, which have now been rectified.

The successful completion of this appraisal is anticipated to drive Ghana’s energy landscape forward, setting a precedent for local participation in the oil and gas industry across Africa.

The project, in partnership with GNPC and GNPC Explorco, is expected to play a crucial role in the country’s oil development.

This initiative is expected to bring significant benefits to the Ghanaian economy, particularly with the potential for increased local content and a boost to the country’s oil output.

The Deepsea Bollsta Rig began operations on October 20, 2024, and other local and international companies are supporting the operations.

“It’s going forward. I can say it’s going forward. We are very happy about how the appraisal is progressing. We are very optimistic of getting the needed data in time. There were some delays due to some unexpected failures and equipment. But it is all rectified and we expect to be done in a couple of days”, he assured.

Mr. Drogt was speaking to a group of journalists who took a tour on the rig to familiarise themselves with the progress of work on the WCTP Block2.

“The objective is to get hydrocarbons at surface and see how big the reservoir is for Springfield. Hopefully it is economically worth to proceed in this field”, the Well Test Officer added.
