The Management of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has announced that approximately GH¢400 million is being disbursed monthly to over 300,000 pensioners as part of its efforts to alleviate old-age poverty in Ghana.

Management revealed that around 1,280 self-employed individuals have been enrolled in the scheme, which aims to reduce poverty in retirement and expand its coverage.
In an interview with Citi News during the Self-Employed Enrollment Drive (SEED) awareness float in Koforidua, General Manager of Operations Kingsley Adjei-Manu urged self-employed individuals and those in the informal sector to place their trust in SSNIT to safeguard their future.
“So far we have enrolled about 128,000 self-employed persons on the scheme and so basically we are still engaging them and getting people to enrol. So this year we started the engagement from Wa and from there we went to Techiman, Sunyani, Takwa and Takoradi last week. We are here in Koforidua to engage our friends to help them also get a road onto the scheme.
“Our friends, our people in the Koforidua area so far, prefer one of the places that we have enrolled a lot of persons and they are also paying their contributions. So we want to encourage them to continue ruling and also paying their contributions so that at the end of the day through the scheme we will help reduce old age poverty.
“So far, on average, every month you pay in about on average about GH¢400 million to about 300,000 pensions and that is helping reduce old age poverty in Ghana.
“We hope that going forward in the years to come, we can get more people to join the scheme so that we can use the scheme to help reduce old-age poverty,” he stated.
