St. Vincent College of Education reopened on Wednesday following a weeklong closure prompted by tensions over the appointment of a new principal. The closure was lifted after successful negotiations between the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.

The resolution came after a meeting on Tuesday between the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, and GTEC’s Director-General, Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, at the Gbewaa Palace.

The disagreement stemmed from the appointment of a new principal to replace the retiring one. Professor Abdulai clarified that the initially selected appointee had declined the role, and the appointment process was not yet completed. The appointee is still employed as a lecturer at the University of Development Studies.

Professor Abdulai assured that a new principal would be appointed, emphasizing GTEC’s commitment to resolving the issue quickly to ensure the smooth operation of the college and meet the educational needs of students.

Musah Yakubu, the Public Relations Officer of Yaa Naa, refuted claims that the overlord acted out of personal interest. He emphasized that the closure was solely aimed at ensuring peace and order in the institution.

Students of the college have expressed relief and excitement about the reopening. Speaking on behalf of the students, SRC President Maxwell Salifu extended their gratitude to the stakeholders involved. He highlighted how the resolution would allow them to continue their studies without further interruptions.
