President-elect John Dramani Mahama has urged supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to desist from vandalizing state property.
Speaking during his acceptance speech on December 9, Mahama addressed reports of NDC supporters damaging public assets since Sunday, December 8, and called for a shift towards constructive efforts to rebuild the nation.
“There have been reports of acts of vandalism at some government facilities and installations. I urge you not to vent your frustrations into criminal enterprise. We must channel our anger and frustration into a positive enterprise of re-setting and rebuilding our nation,” Mahama stated.
He further emphasized the need for the NDC to honour the trust placed in them by Ghanaians and not disappoint the public.
“Let us be brief in our celebrations, for the weight of office will be an onerous one, expectations of Ghanaians are very high and we cannot afford to fail them. Let us maintain and even magnify this joy and the positivity that we feel. We have arrived at this moment because some of you believed that change was possible. Let’s continue to believe that we’re already moving towards the Ghana we want.”
The Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday, December 9, confirmed Mahama’s victory with 6,328,397 votes cast representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast, defeating his primary rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 4,657,304 votes representing 41.61%.
Mahama’s victory also marked a significant achievement for his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which won a majority in the Parliament.
Over 160 seats have already been confirmed for the NDC, including key constituencies traditionally held by the ruling NPP. This success strengthens Mahama’s mandate as he prepares to assume the presidency once again.
