The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has urged the public to support the police in tackling disinformation and misinformation.

He stressed that solving this issue requires everyone’s cooperation.

At a summit organized by the Ghana Report, the IGP pointed out that disinformation and misinformation are major threats to national security and social unity, so it’s crucial to address them directly.

“Disinformation and misinformation are national security threats, and we should view them as such. We should leave here changed, committed to making a difference against these challenges that threaten our nation’s security,” Dr. Dampare stated.

He expressed concern over the public’s reaction when law enforcement takes action against those spreading false information, noting that the same public that demands action often criticizes the police for enforcing the law.

“What do we want as a people? Do we want to be on the side of right or wrong? We need to make a decision. Everyone must be part of the solution in the fight against disinformation and misinformation.

“When individuals spread false information and we take action, some people attack those of us fighting against it,” he remarked.

The IGP further emphasized the need for a change in mindset. “The time has come for us to change our mindset. All the discussions we’ve had require a shift in how we think.

“We have become so inhumane to each other that our happiness often comes from others’ pain. We find joy in someone’s misfortune, and this needs to change,” he concluded.
