The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has emphasized the far-reaching consequences of the ongoing Supreme Court case concerning parliamentary authority and its potential impact on Ghana’s democratic governance.

The case was initiated by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who sought judicial clarification on Speaker Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.
Recently, the Supreme Court issued a stay on Bagbin’s initial ruling, temporarily halting his decision.
Speaking to the press in Accra on Wednesday, November 6, Bagbin highlighted that the outcome of this case could set important precedents for the separation of powers, significantly affecting the balance of authority between Parliament and the judiciary.
He pointed out that the court’s ruling could influence the handling of similar issues in the future, shaping the rule of law and legislative independence in Ghana.
Bagbin urged Ghanaians to remain informed about the case’s progress, stressing the importance of protecting parliamentary autonomy within the larger context of democratic governance.
“It must be said the suit before the Supreme Court raises not just legal questions but, more importantly, has profound implications for our democratic system of governance.
“At its core is the very essence of our democracy. While many legal arguments have been advanced in and out of the court, I recognise the fact that connected political and governance implications have not been addressed sufficiently to enrich the national discourse. It is my considered view this should also be vigorously articulated to give a wholistic approach to resolving the issue,” he stated.
