In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court of Ghana has ruled to expunge the name of James Gyakye Quayson from the Parliament records. The court’s judgment came after upholding a constitutional application that raised concerns about the legality of Quayson’s election as a Member of Parliament.

The plaintiff, Michael Ankomah-Nimfah, had previously obtained a judgment from the High Court in Cape Coast, which restrained Quayson from assuming the role of MP. Ankomah-Nimfah’s argument centered around Quayson’s Canadian citizenship, deeming it a disqualification for holding public office in Ghana.

The case gained attention following a petition filed by a group known as the “Concerned Citizens of Assin North” to the Electoral Commission. The group asserted that Quayson’s allegiance to Canada rendered him ineligible to run for office in Ghana. Their petition eventually led to a legal battle that culminated in the Supreme Court’s ruling.

With the Supreme Court’s decision, Quayson’s name will be removed from Ghana’s Parliament records, and he will no longer be recognized as an elected Member of Parliament.
