A man believed to be in his late 30s lost his life on Saturday, April 19, after being electrocuted while allegedly trying to steal an earth wire from an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) substation at Adoato, near the Metro Mass Transit yard in Kumasi.

The incident triggered a power outage, plunging parts of Greater Kumasi into darkness.
Confirming the incident, Benjamin Obeng Antwi, Public Relations Officer for ECG in Ashanti West, stated that the suspect was electrocuted instantly while attempting to remove the earth cable.
The ECG has raised alarm over the growing trend of theft and vandalism at its facilities, including substations, transformers, and underground cables, particularly in the Ashanti Region.
“We humbly appeal to the general public, especially individuals involved in this illegal act to desist from this illegal act, because this illegal acts affect the provision of stable power supply in the region and could also lead to the loss of lives as we saw this morning,” Obeng Antwi stated.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has conveyed the body to the morgue while investigations continue. ECG teams are currently working to restore power to affected customers.
