A Circuit Court Judge has called on relevant authorities to ensure that all highways are properly illuminated to prevent accidents and save lives.
Judge Sedinam Awo Kwadam made this appeal following a case where a pedestrian died after being hit by a vehicle.

She highlighted that poor street lighting contributes significantly to the increasing number of accidents and fatalities.
Judge Kwadam emphasized that the lack of visibility, especially for pedestrians not wearing bright clothing, is a major factor in such accidents.
She urged the authorities to activate all streetlights and repair any that are defective, pointing out that street lighting is often included in electricity bills, yet many highways remain unlit.
The case in question involved Colbert Ni Ayitey Tagoe, who faced charges of careless driving and negligently causing harm after hitting and killing Cynthia Dede Tettey with his Mercedes Benz on April 10, 2021.
Tagoe, who pleaded not guilty, was granted bail and is scheduled to return to court on October 16, 2024.
The incident occurred at Madina Redco Junction, near a footbridge under construction. Tettey was crossing the road when she was struck by Tagoe’s vehicle.
Despite being rushed to the 37 Military Hospital, she succumbed to her injuries three days later.
The police have since reviewed the case, which has been forwarded to the Attorney General for further action.
