In the Kpone Katamaso Municipality at Tema in the Greater Accra Region, about 25 teenage girls get pregnant monthly.

Over 151 teenage pregnancies have been recorded from January to June 2021, which means on average, six teenage girls get pregnant weekly.

In an interview by GhanaTalksRadio, with the Kpone Katamaso Municipal Health Director, Dr. Esther Priscilla Danquah at Kpone on an event to mark the 2021 World Population Day, she mentioned that the figure could go up if measures were not put in place to control the situation.

Many of such teenage pregnancies have not been reported in any of the health facilities within the municipality, the number could be higher than what has been captured, according to the Health Director.

“The Faith Base Organization (FBO), the clergymen, and other stakeholders must take up their games to secure a brighter future for the adolescent,” Dr. Priscilla Danquah, added.

Parents should ensure they provide the needs of their children, “so that they could not be lured by other men into having sexual intercourse with them for financial support,” she added.

She further explained that, “adolescents especially girls encounter many challenges during adolescent stage and they need to be given special attention.”

Parents and teachers must not shy away from educating the children on the dangers associated with unprotected sexual activities, which would prevent them from engaging in such act.
