The Tema Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has suffered a fire incident that destroyed major cables behind the Lube Oil Company in Tema, Greater Accra Region.

The fire, which broke out around 5 PM on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, rendered the cables unsalvageable and caused temporary power outages in areas including Adjetey Ansah, Naval Quarters, Aunty Kate, Leonardo, and Bankuman. While some areas experienced prolonged outages, power was fully restored to all affected customers by the morning of January 1, 2025.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. However, the Public Relations Officer for ECG’s Tema Region, Ms. Sakyiwaa Mensah, expressed gratitude to the Ghana National Fire Service for their swift response in containing the blaze.

Ms. Mensah was asked about the cost of the damaged cables, to which she said that “the extent of damage is still being assessed. Until this assessment is done, it will be difficult for us to ascertain the cost associated. ”

She, however, added that “it will be an appreciable cost as the damage is major.” She also apologised to the affected customers who had no power to usher in the new year due to this fire incident.

The PRO further cautioned the public generally to be careful of how open fire is handled in such times of dry weather and bushes as the bushes can easily catch fire and end up causing massive property damage, and affect businesses.
