Ghana has experienced a setback in the latest FIFA World Rankings, dropping by six places due to its underwhelming performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

While the Black Stars ended 2023 in the 61st spot, they now sit at 67th globally, with a further decline in their ranking within the African continent.

Presently positioned 14th on the CAF rankings, Ghana finds itself trailing behind Cape Verde, South Africa, and DR Congo, despite being a four-time AFCON champion.

These changes occurred following the conclusion of the 2023 AFCON tournament held in Cote d’Ivoire, where the host nation emerged as the victor.

Ghana’s premature exit from the group stage, with only two points gained from matches against Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique, contributed to their ranking decline.

Meanwhile, Cote d’Ivoire (39th, up 10) is among the African teams benefitting from their continental triumph, while Nigeria (28th, up 14), the runners-up, have also made significant progress. Notably, Nigeria surpassed Angola (93rd, up 24), the most improved team in the latest edition of the global ranking, whom they defeated in the quarter-finals.
