Former Commissioner of Police, COP George Alex Mensah, is standing firm on his stance that the Ghana Police Service does not possess the authority to penalize him in relation to the alleged plot to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, from his position. He maintains that even if the committee investigating the matter finds him guilty of any wrongdoing, it is the state that must pursue legal action against him and provide concrete evidence to support their case.

COP Mensah articulated his perspective during an interview with Joy News, emphasizing that he believes the committee is conducting a thorough investigation in their pursuit of the truth and has gathered all the necessary information to inform their final report. It appears that he is confident that any punitive measures, if deemed necessary, should be taken through the legal system and not directly by the police service itself.

In essence, COP Mensah is asserting that the responsibility for pursuing legal action and substantiating any allegations against him lies with the state authorities rather than the internal disciplinary procedures of the Ghana Police Service. He appears to have trust in the impartiality and thoroughness of the committee’s investigation.

. ” Unfortunately for them, I am no more a police man. But has Supt.George Asare done? Because he went to see a politician and and spoke to him,he should be charged? For what? If you go into the police service’s rules and regulations, it says that, if you do anything that will bring about political uproar, then you can be charged. And the one who brought the uproar is the one who brought the recording into the media. There was nothing like a plot”, he reiterated.

“ The police service cannot do anything to me. if the committee comes out that I have committed a crime, then the state can do something to me. I have nothing to do with the police service as I speak”.

After dedicating 31 years of service in the police force, Alex Mensah officially retired on September 18, 2023. He clarified that the accusations leveled against him were tied to a leaked recording where he was heard expressing criticism of Dr. Dampare’s administration and indicating his unwillingness to support the governing party if the IGP continued to hold office until 2024.
