Mr. Emmanuel Yawlui, the Environmental Health and Sanitation Officer for Hohoe Municipal, emphasizes the importance of checking product expiration dates for both consumers and sellers. He cautions that the health of individuals is compromised when expired items are consumed or sold.
Speaking with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) following the disposal of expired products seized from vendors, Mr. Yawlui revealed that routine checks by the Environmental Health and Sanitation unit will persist to rid shops of expired goods.
He observed that some sellers unknowingly retained provisions for extended periods, leading to a lack of awareness regarding expiration dates.

Mr. Yawlui highlighted the public’s lack of awareness about the expiration status of purchased foods.
He emphasized that the unit conducts thorough inspections, collaborating with shop owners during quarterly visits to markets and stores. These inspections, occurring before and after festive seasons, aim to ensure product quality.
Despite ongoing educational efforts, Mr. Yawlui acknowledged that the quantity of seized expired products remains relatively low.
Among the items seized are expired cornflakes, biscuits, detergents, bottled and canned drinks, sachets of margarine, and iodated salts.
