Tips on how and when to stop breastfeeding

Breast milk is considered the healthiest milk for babies.Breast feeding is encouraged for babies as this keeps them really healthy.

It takes determination and a measure of tough love to accomplish stopping breast feeding for your baby.

Exclusively breast fed babies are healthy and their overall outlook is encouraging.

However the day to stop which is also known as weaning your baby off breast milk is usually tough for both mother and child.

From seven months,mothers are already encouraged to start complimenting with cereals,Rice, beans also incorporate fruits like Banana,Apple,Watermelon and pawpaw.Liver,fish and crayfish should not be left out as well.

When the child is above one year,it is advisable to start thinking weaning the child off breast milk.

There are mothers who still breastfeed their babies up to a year and half while some still finds it necessary to breastfeed uptill two years,it is still not a bad idea,there is absolutely nothing wrong with it as long as it suits you and your spouse.

To some women,breastfeeding serves as a natural birth control, by all means you may breastfeed your child until you are ready for another.

Stopping breast feeding  is usually more difficult at night when the baby wakes up since they are already used to snuggling up to their mothers and suck on the breast so breaking the the pattern makes them uncomfortable.

There are certain things to do to make this easier for you and your baby.

1.Don’t sleep with your baby,if your mum or sibling is with you,allow the baby to sleep with them or alternatively, get a trusted person to stay with you during this phase as babies are able to smell breast milk just like adult as smell foods and our palates are awakened.

2.There must always be alternative food for the baby kept in a flask or warmer.

3.Play lullaby or soft music for them when they wake up, rock them gently and make them as comfortable as possible. Also diapers can be changed in the process to make the feel better.

With time they will adjust to it and forget the breast milk.
