On November 30, Toastmasters held a transformative conference in Accra aimed at empowering its members to boost their confidence, enhance their communication effectiveness, and sharpen their leadership vision, supporting their journeys of personal growth and self-discovery.
Toastmasters, a non-profit educational organization, is committed to helping individuals develop their public speaking, leadership, and communication skills in a supportive and nurturing environment. With over 16,000 clubs and more than 300,000 members worldwide from various professions and backgrounds, the organization has become a global network.

At the conference, Njabulo Thela, Regional Advisor of Toastmasters, spoke to the media about the profound impact the organization has had on individuals striving to improve their communication and leadership skills.
Describing Toastmasters as a “gym for public speaking and leadership,” Thela emphasized that the organization offers a structured and adaptable platform for people to practice and enhance their communication abilities.
“Public speaking isn’t just about addressing large audiences or delivering motivational speeches. It’s about articulating your thoughts effectively, whether you’re speaking to one person or a room full of people. Toastmasters equips you with the tools to inform, persuade, and connect,” Thela explained.

He added that the skills gained through Toastmasters extend beyond public speaking, also fostering leadership capabilities that contribute to personal and professional growth.
Thela also noted that the organization is inclusive, welcoming participants from diverse backgrounds such as entrepreneurs, professionals, students, and even parents who seek to improve communication within their families.
“Whether you’re pitching a business idea, advancing in your career, or enhancing your interpersonal communication, Toastmasters has something valuable to offer,” he said.
Njabulo emphasized that active listening and constructive feedback are essential lessons that members acquire.
“These skills are essential not only in professional environments but also in everyday interactions, strengthening relationships at home, work, and within the community. The value you get is unmatched. Toastmasters combines public speaking and leadership training in one comprehensive programme.”
Njabulo reflected on his personal journey, acknowledging his initial reluctance to join Toastmasters. However, he expressed how this decision ultimately transformed his life.
“It took me three years to join, but looking back, I wish I had started sooner. Toastmasters has opened doors for me and accelerated my professional growth.”
One of his most treasured recollections was his tenure as a Division Director, where he observed the realization of his vision through collective endeavours.

He emphasized the fulfilment he derives from guiding and mentoring others.
“Mentoring others and watching them grow into confident leaders has been incredibly rewarding,” he said, recounting a heartfelt voicemail from a mentee who credited Toastmasters and Njabulo’s guidance for a recent promotion.
Toastmasters is steadfast in its mission to empower individuals across the globe, and Njabulo firmly believes that its influence is significant.
“If everyone joined Toastmasters, the world would be a better place. We’d have better communicators, stronger leaders, and healthier relationships.”
He encouraged the young individuals to initiate action by stating, “Take the first step. Research, find a local club, and give it a try. You won’t regret it.”
