In a recent statement, Nigerian musician Chinedu Okoli, known as Flavour, supported Jamaican reggae legend Buju Banton’s view that Afrobeats artists are ‘lazy.’

Flavour, a prominent figure in African music, expressed concern that many current Afrobeats artists focus too much on repetitive beats and catchy hooks, neglecting lyrical depth and musical innovation.

He urged his peers to push creative boundaries and improve the quality of their music.

Flavour made these comments during a recent episode of the ‘In My Opinion’ podcast, agreeing with Banton that Afrobeats lacks depth due to the perceived laziness of its artists.

He also highlighted that his music is rooted in highlife, a genre distinct from Afrobeats.

Flavour expressed disapproval of Western media’s tendency to categorize all African artists under the Afrobeats label.

He emphasized the need for greater recognition and respect for the diverse range of African music genres.
