Tragedy in the ring: Nigerian boxer Sherif Lawal dies after debut fight

Tragedy struck the boxing world on May 11, 2024, as Nigerian-born UK representative Sherif Lawal lost his life following a devastating knockout in his professional debut.

Lawal, 29, stepped into the ring at the Harrow Leisure Centre, eager to make a name for himself in the boxing world.

However, his dreams were cut short when he faced Portuguese contender Malam Varela, who delivered a crushing punch in the sixth round that sent Lawal crashing face-first to the canvas.

Despite immediate medical attention, Lawal was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, where he was tragically pronounced dead on arrival.

The boxing community was left in shock and mourning, with Warren Boxing Management, the fight’s promoters, expressing profound sorrow and regret. “Sherif collapsed during the fight, and despite the paramedics’ valiant efforts, he was ultimately pronounced dead,” they said in a statement.

The British Boxing Board of Control also extended their heartfelt condolences to Lawal’s family, saying, “Our thoughts are with the family of Sherif Lawal during this difficult time, following his tragic passing. The entire boxing community in Great Britain shares in their grief, and we will do everything in our power to support them through this difficult time.”

The Guardian reported that the boxing world was in mourning, with fans and fellow boxers paying tribute to Lawal’s memory and legacy.
