Coach Mondher Kebaier has been sacked as Tunisia after the North Africans’ quarter-final exit at the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Tunisian Football Federation communicated the decision to part ways with Kebaier on Sunday, a day after their elimination.
The Carthage Eagles were beaten 1-0 on Saturday by a Burkina Faso side who are 30 places below Tunisia in the world rankings.
Kebaier, 51, had been in charge of Tunisia since August 2019.
His assistant Jalel Kadri will replace him as coach, with Kadri set to take charge of the side for the two-legged play-off against Mali in March for a place at the 2022 World Cup.
Tunisia were disappointing in the group phase as they finished third with three points. But they managed to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
They stunned Nigeria in the round of 16, a match that saw Kadri on the bench as Kabaier was ruled out due to Covid.
The win against Nigeria was expected to spur them on to reach at least the last four but Tunisia fell to Burkina Faso who finished the game with 10 men as goalscorer Dango Ouattara was sent off for a dangerous elbow in the 82nd minute.
