Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced on Tuesday the introduction of new sustainability-focused features on the platform, including an “EV preference” that allows customers to choose fully electric vehicles by default when hailing a ride.

This update follows the company’s “Uber Green” service, which previously offered a mix of battery electric and hybrid vehicles.
Now, Uber can offer only battery electric vehicles in over 40 cities worldwide, according to statements made at Uber’s Go Get Zero sustainability conference in London.
During the event, Khosrowshahi emphasized that the push towards electric mobility comes at a time when the topic has become politically sensitive, especially with the upcoming 2024 U.S. elections.
However, he noted that the shift towards all-electric options is gaining momentum. He stressed that achieving zero emissions will require contributions from policymakers and businesses alike, including the need for affordable electric vehicles, stronger EV mandates, and accessible charging infrastructure in all communities.
Uber also introduced an “EV Mentor” program for drivers, which connects them with support for transitioning to electric vehicles. Additionally, the company launched an AI chatbot, powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, to address drivers’ queries about buying and using electric vehicles.
Beyond ride-hailing, Uber is expanding its sustainability initiatives on its delivery platform. In New York City and Los Angeles, farmers’ market produce will now be available on Uber Eats.
In Paris, Uber is investing nearly $1 million to help restaurants switch to sustainable packaging alternatives like seaweed-based materials and biodegradable bags.
In the U.K., Uber partnered with energy provider Octopus Energy and EV manufacturer BYD to offer 1,000 free home EV chargers for drivers. This collaboration will also provide access to discounted charging options, reducing overall costs for drivers.
