The University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale has announced an indefinite postponement of the commencement of its 2024/2025 academic year, originally set for September 27, 2024.

This decision is due to ongoing industrial actions by key unions within Ghana’s public universities, including the Ghana Association of University Administration (GAUA), the Senior Staff Association – Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU-TUC). These strikes have significantly disrupted academic services at UDS.

As a result, both new and returning students are left uncertain about when the academic year will resume.

In a statement, the university assured that “all students and the general public will be informed about subsequent arrangements once the industrial action has concluded.”

Additionally, the University of Ghana has also postponed the start of its 2024/2025 academic year, citing similar disruptions caused by the strikes affecting regular university operations.
