Spain captain Álvaro Morata and Manchester City midfielder Rodri have been given a one-match suspension by UEFA due to their controversial celebration during Spain’s Euro 2024 victory.

The suspension follows their chanting of “Gibraltar is Spanish” in front of thousands of fans in Madrid’s Cibeles Square on July 15.

The Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) has deemed the chant provocative and disrespectful. As a result, both players will miss Spain’s next match against Serbia next month.

The incident occurred as Spain celebrated their 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final. The chanting by Morata and Rodri was perceived as a political statement about Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory at the southern tip of Spain. Spain has historically claimed sovereignty over Gibraltar, which has been under British rule since the 18th century.

UEFA cited the players for not adhering to the “general principles of conduct” and bringing the sport into disrepute.

UEFA’s statement read:

“The players are suspended for failing to comply with the general principles of conduct, violating the basic rules of decent conduct, and using sporting events for non-sporting manifestations.”

The Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) formally complained to UEFA, calling the players’ behavior “extremely provocative and insulting.” The GFA emphasized that football should focus on sporting achievements rather than political statements.

During Spain’s victory parade in Cibeles Square, Rodri chanted “Gibraltar is Spanish,” and Morata joined in, encouraging the crowd. This was criticized for being political, which was unusual for such a celebratory event.

Even though there was controversy, Rodri was named Player of the Tournament for Euro 2024 for his strong performance. However, his actions after the match have overshadowed his achievement.
