UG delays commencement of the 2024/2025 academic year due to strikes

The University of Ghana has officially postponed the commencement of the 2024/2025 academic year due to ongoing strike actions by various employee groups, which have significantly disrupted normal university operations.

In a statement issued by the university administration, both students and stakeholders were informed of the decision, although a revised start date has not yet been provided.

“It has been announced for the attention of students and other stakeholders that the start of the 2024/2025 academic year has been postponed due to the ongoing strike actions by various employee groups,” the statement noted.

These strikes, which have hindered essential services across the university, involve multiple employee groups seeking better working conditions, salary adjustments, and enhanced benefits.

As a result of these industrial actions, critical administrative and academic activities have been halted, making it impossible to proceed with the new academic year as initially planned.

Students are encouraged to remain patient and attentive to further updates from the university, which has committed to providing information as negotiations with the striking employee groups progress.

Concerns have been raised regarding the broader implications for the academic calendar, with fears that extended disruptions could affect both the conclusion of the current academic cycle and the initiation of future programs.

The postponement stems from ongoing labor disputes between university management and key unions, including the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Federation of University Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG).

These unions have entered an indefinite strike, demanding improvements in their working conditions.

Their grievances include delayed pension contributions, unpaid vehicle maintenance allowances, and the suspension of certain previously agreed-upon benefits.
