Prime minister Boris Johnson is facing increasing pressure to impose stricter lockdown rules, following calls from ministers and scientists to bring a “circuit-breaker” lockdown in place.

During PMQs on Wednesday, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer accused Mr Johnson of rejecting the advice of his scientific advisers and “abandoning science” after he announced the new three-tier lockdown system on Monday instead of a harsher time-limited national lockdown.

It comes as Northern Ireland announced it is imposing a four-week national lockdown, which will see restaurants and pubs closed for four weeks and schools closed for two weeks over the half-term Halloween break. The Welsh government has said it is “actively considering” the same type of lockdown there.
