The University of Ghana’s student leadership has sounded the alarm over the potential disenfranchisement of students in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

In a press conference on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, George Annor Ansah, the Junior Common Room (JCR) President of Jean Nelson Aka Hall, highlighted the numerous challenges students are facing in the election process and appealed to the Electoral Commission (EC) for urgent intervention.

Ansah explained that during the Limited Voter Registration Exercise, many students were unable to register due to logistical challenges such as long queues and system shutdowns at registration centers.

He emphasized that this has affected a significant number of students, who are now at risk of being disenfranchised.

The student leader also revealed that they have received numerous texts from students seeking assistance with registration.

Furthermore, Ansah pointed out that the ongoing voter transfer exercise has added to the students’ woes, requiring them to travel to district EC offices, which is a significant burden.

He lamented the lack of a voter transfer center on campus, which would have made it easier for students to participate in the process.

With a large student population expected on campus on December 7, 2024, the student leadership is pressing for a solution to ensure that students’ voices are heard in the elections.
